Nagpur: Water is essential for the body — it helps in digestion, flushes out toxins, and keeps us hydrated and healthy. Experts recommend drinking 1.5 to 2 liters of water daily, but drinking water at the wrong time, especially right after certain foods, can negatively affect digestion.

According to nutritionists and Ayurvedic experts, drinking water immediately after meals can dilute stomach acids, slow digestion, and cause bloating or indigestion. Ayurveda suggests waiting at least 30 minutes after eating before drinking water.

Here are five common foods after which you should avoid drinking water immediately:

1. Watermelon
Watermelon already contains about 96% water. Drinking additional water right after eating it can make your stomach feel heavy or bloated. Wait 40–50 minutes before having water.

2. Banana
Bananas are rich in fiber, potassium, and natural sugars. However, drinking water immediately after eating a banana may cause gas, nausea, or stomach discomfort. It’s best to wait 30 minutes.

3. Citrus Fruits (Orange, Lemon, Grapes)
These fruits are high in Vitamin C and citric acid. Drinking water right after eating them can disturb stomach acidity and lead to gas or heartburn. Wait for some time before drinking water.

4. Peanuts
Peanuts are protein-rich and increase body heat. Drinking water after consuming them can slow digestion and cause discomfort. Wait 20–30 minutes before hydrating.

5. Milk
Milk is a good source of calcium and vitamins. But drinking water soon after milk can cause acidity or heaviness. Experts recommend waiting 30 minutes to 1 hour after milk before drinking water.

In summary, while water is vital, timing matters. Following these small steps can keep your digestive system balanced and your body healthier.
