Dhaka – Bangladesh was shaken on Monday after a special international crimes tribunal sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death. The court found her guilty of ordering a violent crackdown on student protesters, which resulted in the deaths of 1,400 people.

According to the judgment, Hasina directly authorised security forces to use extreme force during the protests, leading to systematic violence and mass casualties. The court stated that she played an active role in the chain of command responsible for the deadly operation.

The trial proceeded in her absence, as Hasina left Bangladesh and took refuge in India following the 2024 political crisis. With the verdict announced, authorities have tightened security across Dhaka, anticipating unrest.

Her supporters have condemned the decision as “political revenge,” while opposition leaders have hailed it as a “historic day for justice.”
Experts warn that the ruling could trigger further instability and reshape the nation’s political landscape.
