New Delhi — The Supreme Court has postponed the key hearing on OBC reservation in the Maharashtra Local Body Elections 2025, creating uncertainty about the election schedule. The matter was heard before Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi.

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta requested additional time to collect required information. The court accepted the request and fixed the next hearing for Friday, November 28. This delay has added confusion over the final election dates.

Senior advocate Indira Jaising, arguing for the petitioners, said that elections have already been announced and candidates have filed their nomination forms. She also pointed out that several local bodies have exceeded the 50% reservation limit, which is not allowed under the Constitution.

Solicitor General Mehta told the court that the government needs one more day to understand earlier court orders correctly. He informed the bench that elections for 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats are scheduled for December 2, while polls for Zilla Parishads, Panchayat Samitis and Municipal Corporations are still pending.

The Supreme Court said it is not expressing any opinion at this stage, but clarified that elections must follow its final order.

The State Election Commission stated that if an order had been issued today, it would require immediate changes to the reservation list.

The Supreme Court will hear the case again on Friday at 12 PM.
