India Morning News
Nagpur: Many people wake up with watery eyes. Doctors say this can happen when the eyes make extra tears or when the tear-drain system is not working well.
Common Reasons
- Eye experts explain that simple things can trigger morning tearing:
- Sudden bright light after waking up
- Cool air from a fan or AC
- Dust, smoke or room sprays
- Bedroom allergies from dust, pets or cold air
These irritants can make the eyes feel uncomfortable, causing more tears.
Possible Eye Problems
Dry Eyes
Dry eyes can strangely cause more water.
The tear layer on the eye becomes weak, so tears dry fast.
To protect the eye, the body makes quick, watery tears that overflow.
Eyes Not Fully Closed During Sleep
Some people sleep with their eyelids slightly open.
This dries the eyes at night, and in the morning they suddenly water to protect the dry area.
Corneal Surface Injury
A small scratch from a nail or paper can damage the cornea. In the morning, when the eyes open, the surface can rub again, leading to:
- Sharp pain
- Extra tears
- Light sensitivity
- What You Can Do
- Avoid bright light directly after waking up.
- Don’t sleep in direct fan or AC air.
- Keep some moisture in the room.
- Use clean pillow covers and bedsheets if you have allergies.
- Avoid strong sprays or chemicals at night.
- Wear glasses during morning walks.
- Artificial tear drops may help reduce irritation.
If watering continues with pain or infection, an eye doctor should check it.
