Mumbai: Actress Sumona Chakravarti shared her scary experience during Maratha protest in South Mumbai. On Aug 31 around 12:30 pm, she was travelling from Colaba to Fort when her car was stopped by a crowd.

She said one man wearing a saffron scarf hit the bonnet of her car. Others banged on the windows while shouting “Jai Maharashtra!” This happened twice within five minutes. At that time, no police were seen. Later, she noticed some policemen but they were just sitting and talking.

Sumona said she has lived in South Mumbai most of her life, but this was the first time she felt unsafe in her own car during daytime. She thought of recording a video but didn’t, as she feared it might make things worse.

She wrote that this shows a failure of law and order. According to her, this does not look like a safe or developed India, but like a country going in wrong direction.

After her post, many people criticised her. Some told her to “go back to West Bengal.” Others mocked her by saying she had no career apart from comedy shows. A few even made rude comments about how she looks.

At same time, some people supported her and said instead of attacking her, the real issue of safety and police inaction should be discussed. A few also defended the Maratha protesters, saying they were only demanding their rights and usually respect women.

The online fight has now brought West Bengal into discussion for no clear reason.

Meanwhile, police have increased security near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus where protests are still going on. This comes as Mumbai workers return after the Ganesh festival break.
