Mumbai: State govt’s new order on Maratha reservation has started a fresh dispute inside ruling alliance. After activist Manoj Jarange Patil’s hunger strike, the govt agreed to six of his eight demands and issued a govt resolution (GR). But this has upset OBC community.

Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, a senior OBC leader, joined pre cabinet meeting but left before main cabinet meeting began. By walking out, he showed his protest, and this has created big discussions in politics.

OBC leaders say govt had no right to issue this GR. They claim only Backward Classes Commission can decide which community should get reservation. They also accuse govt of giving Marathas “backdoor entry” into OBC quota, even though the govt says OBC rights will not be reduced.

Leaders also allege that govt ignored proper process of asking for public objections and suggestions. They say order was made under pressure. Some OBC groups are preparing to challenge GR in court on Monday.

Maratha community has celebrated the decision. But OBC leaders are very angry, and new protests may start soon. Experts believe state’s politics will become more heated in coming days.
