Pune: The redevelopment of the historic Mahatma Gandhi Auditorium at BJ Government Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital in Pune is set to accelerate following a crucial meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Monday.

The prestigious institution, a cornerstone of medical education since pre-Independence times, will see its auditorium transformed while preserving its heritage status, as per directives issued to officials. Currently, the auditorium has a seating capacity of just 500, insufficient for the college’s 1,500 students and its needs for cultural, academic, and state-level events.

To address this, the auditorium’s capacity is proposed to be expanded to 1,500 seats. Authorities have been instructed to urgently submit an integrated development plan to facilitate this upgrade. The revamped auditorium will be modern, well-equipped, and befitting the institution’s legacy.

Additionally, the meeting granted in-principle approval for constructing a 1,000-student-capacity hostel for postgraduate students within the college premises, ensuring accommodation for all pursuing advanced medical courses.

The redevelopment projects are expected to enhance the institute’s infrastructure, provide students with state-of-the-art facilities, and further elevate the prestige of BJ Medical College and Sassoon Hospital, a leading hub for medical education and healthcare.
