New Delhi: The suspense over who would become India’s 15th Vice President has finally ended. In this election, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan contested from NDA side, while the Opposition’s INDIA bloc fielded former judge B. Sudershan Reddy.
After counting of votes, C.P. Radhakrishnan defeated the Opposition candidate and was elected as new Vice President of India.
In Vice President election, a total of 768 votes were cast, out of which 15 were declared invalid. NDA candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan secured 452 votes, defeating the INDIA bloc’s nominee. With this, NDA has shown increased strength, while the Opposition faced a major setback.
Normally, both Houses of Parliament together have 788 members. At present, 7 seats are vacant, which brought down number to 781 eligible voters. However, 13 MPs did not cast their votes, leaving the total valid votes at 768.
Among those who abstained from voting were 4 MPs from BRS, 7 from BJD, 1 from Shiromani Akali Dal, and 1 Independent MP. Out of the votes polled, 427 MPs from the NDA cast their vote, ensuring a clear majority for their candidate.
