Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, today briefed the media following the Centre’s decision to increase excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre.
Addressing concerns, the Minister clarified that this revision will not impact the retail prices of fuel for consumers. The adjustment is aimed at fiscal consolidation and aligns with broader macroeconomic strategies without burdening end-users.
“Despite the ₹2 hike in excise duty on both petrol and diesel, there will be no increase in the retail selling price. Oil marketing companies will absorb the revision without passing it on to consumers,” said Shri Puri.
This decision comes amidst stable international crude prices and is expected to strengthen the government’s revenue stream while maintaining fuel affordability.
