New Delhi, 26th April 2025:
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an important advisory to all media platforms, news agencies, and social media users, urging them to exercise utmost responsibility while reporting on defence operations and security-related matters.

The advisory emphasizes that, in the interest of national security, no real-time coverage or dissemination of visuals or information related to defence operations or movement of security forces should be undertaken.

Key Points from the Advisory:

No Live Coverage: Media channels are directed not to broadcast live visuals or real-time updates concerning defence operations, movements, or anti-terrorist activities.

Protection of National Security: Premature disclosure of sensitive information can inadvertently assist hostile elements and jeopardize the safety of forces and operational effectiveness.

Past Incidents Highlight Risks: Unrestricted media coverage during past events like the Kargil War, 26/11 Mumbai attacks, and Kandahar hijacking adversely affected national interests.

Legal Framework:

Rule 6(1)(p) of the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021, mandates that no programme shall carry live coverage of any anti-terrorist operation.

Media reporting should be restricted to official briefings by authorized government officers until operations conclude.

Liability for Violations: Violating the advisory could lead to legal action under the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021.

Call for Responsible Journalism: Media outlets, digital platforms, and individuals are urged to uphold vigilance, sensitivity, and responsibility, ensuring national security is not compromised.

The Ministry has reaffirmed that this advisory is issued with the approval of the competent authority and expects all stakeholders to adhere strictly in the interest of the nation’s security.
