Pune: Hunger strike by Maratha leader Manoj Jarange Patil has shaken Maharashtra politics. On Sunday, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) MP Supriya Sule went to Azad Maidan, Mumbai, to meet him. However, while leaving the protest site, some protesters raised slogans against her, blocked her car, and even threw water bottles at her vehicle.
Today, speaking in Pune, Sule gave her first reaction to the incident.
Sule on Protesters
Supriya Sule said, “This is a massive agitation, so a few such incidents are natural. Young people are emotional. As a public representative, it was my moral responsibility to visit Mr. Jarange Patil, inquire about his health, and have a brief discussion with him.”
She also raised concerns about the poor conditions at the protest site. “There are serious cleanliness issues. It is raining heavily, some areas have no electricity, and protesters are facing hardship. I urge the state government and BMC to look after sanitation and basic facilities there,” she added.
Criticism of Government
Turning her attention towards the government, Sule said, “In 2018, Devendra Fadnavis had suggested a path for reservation. Why has it not been implemented yet? The BJP has been in power for 11 years, but the issue remains unsolved. Since they have the majority of MPs and MLAs, the responsibility lies with them.”
She further demanded a quick political solution: “The current government is responsible for this agitation. If they are serious, they should call an all-party meeting, hold a special assembly session, and resolve this issue within 24 hours. If the Home Department has details of those supplying materials to the protesters, make it public. Otherwise, the government will be seen as a failure.”
