Mumbai: Maharashtra has been receiving very heavy rainfall for the past few weeks. In Aug, rains had already damaged farms, and now in Sept, the situation has become worse. Large parts of farmland are flooded, and crops have been washed away. Farmers are demanding financial help, and many are asking the govt to declare a “wet drought.”
State Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharne said sudden changes in weather are bringing extreme rain. “Crops in 30 districts and more than 62 lakh acres have been ruined. Officials are visiting villages and checking the losses. Farmers will get relief from the government,” he promised.
On demand for declaring a wet drought, Bharne said, “Rain is still going on. After reviewing the full damage, the CM and DCM will take a decision.Govt will stand with the farmers.”
Districts like Nanded, Washim, Yavatmal, Buldhana, Solapur, Hingoli, Amravati, Jalgaon, Wardha, Sangli, Ahmednagar, Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), Beed, Latur, Dhule, Ratnagiri, Chandrapur, Satara, Nashik, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, Gadchiroli, Raigad, Nagpur, Pune and many others have suffered heavy damage.
Crops such as soybean, cotton, maize, tur, urad, and moong are the most affected. In some areas, vegetables, sugarcane, onions, bajra, fruits, and turmeric are also damaged.
