Kathmandu: Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has become Nepal’s first woman Prime Minister. She took oath last night at Presidential Palace in Kathmandu. President Ramchandra Paudel led ceremony, with Vice President Rambaran Yadav and other leaders present.
Her appointment comes after days of violence. Young protesters, called Gen Z, were angry about corruption and ban on social media. Clashes killed several people and forced KP Sharma Oli to resign as Prime Minister.
After three days of talks, leaders chose Ms. Karki to lead an interim govt. She is known for being honest and was also Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice.
President may soon dissolve Parliament. After that, Ms. Karki will select her team, which may include young protest representatives. Protesters had demanded a new, clean govt without corrupt politicians.
