Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated to dangerous levels following India’s precision missile and drone strikes — codenamed Operation Sindoor — on terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes, carried out early Wednesday morning, killed at least 31 people and targeted nine locations, including four in Pakistan’s Punjab region, in what is being described as India’s most extensive cross-border military operation in decades.

The attacks came in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack in April, which left 26 civilians dead. India stated it targeted only “terrorist infrastructure” and avoided military installations, calling the strikes “measured and proportionate”. Pakistan, however, denied the presence of any terror camps in the targeted areas and condemned the strikes as an “act of war”, claiming civilians were killed.

In response, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed vengeance, stating, “We will avenge every drop of our martyrs’ blood.” Pakistan also claimed to have shot down an Indian drone near Lahore, with no response yet from Indian authorities.

Both nations have since shut down major airports — including Karachi, Lahore, and Sialkot in Pakistan, and over 20 airports in northern India. A state of emergency has been declared in Pakistan’s Sindh region, with all medical staff put on standby.

Indian border states like Punjab and Rajasthan remain on high alert, with blackout drills and enhanced drone defences. Border security forces have been given shoot-on-sight orders for any suspicious activity.

Cross-border shelling continues along the Line of Control, with casualties reported on both sides. Meanwhile, international actors, including Iran, have stepped in to mediate and de-escalate the volatile situation.

With retaliation threats looming and national pride at stake, South Asia finds itself teetering on the brink of a deeper conflict.
