Candidates can now spend up to ₹13 lakh in local body polls
Nagpur: Ahead of the upcoming local body elections, the Maharashtra State Election Commission has provided major relief to candidates by increasing the election campaign spending limit.
Due to rising campaign costs, including banners, posters, and logistics, the Commission decided to raise the limit by nearly 1.5 times. This move aims to make elections more practical and fair for all candidates.
Earlier, the spending limit was based on the number of members in each civic body. Now, it will depend on the type of municipal corporation, ensuring a more transparent and equitable system.
New Spending Limits (per candidate):
-
A-Class Corporations: Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur – ₹11 lakh
-
B-Class Corporations: Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nashik, Thane – ₹13 lakh
-
C-Class Corporations: Kalyan-Dombivli, Navi Mumbai, Sambhajinagar, Vasai-Virar – ₹11 lakh
-
D-Class Corporations: 19 smaller cities – ₹9 lakh
The Election Commission said this revision would allow candidates to reach more voters and run efficient campaigns without violating expenditure norms.
