New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday during the SCO summit in Tianjin, China.

Putin called Modi his “dear friend” and gave him a ride in his special bulletproof Aurus car. Modi later shared their photo inside the car on social media.

India and China are biggest buyers of Russian oil. Even though the U.S. has put extra taxes on India for this, both India and China are still buying from Russia.

While walking towards Chinese President Xi Jinping, Modi and Putin held hands and smiled as they talked.

At their meeting, Putin said Russia and India have been close friends for many years and will continue to be in future. Modi said India and Russia always stand together, even in hard times.

Modi also said he supports peace efforts in Ukraine and hopes the war will end soon. A day earlier, he had spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy about finding a peaceful solution.

Modi wrote on social media that his meeting with Putin was “excellent” and that they talked about working together in trade, space, culture, security, and fertilisers. He added that the India–Russia partnership is very important for peace and stability in the world.
