New Delhi: Nepal has seen two days of big protests that turned violent. Crowds broke into govt buildings and set Parliament and leaders’ houses on fire.

On Tuesday night (Sept 9), Nepal Army took charge of security to control the unrest. The Indian govt asked Indians in Nepal to stay inside and not move around. Indian airlines also stopped flights to Kathmandu.

PM Modi on violence:

PM Narendra Modi called violence in Nepal “deeply painful” and appealed for peace. He stressed that Nepal’s peace, stability, and progress are very important for India. PM Modi also led a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security to review the fast-changing situation in the neighbouring country.

Protests, mostly led by young students called “Gen Z,” started after govt banned social media apps. Even though the ban was removed on Monday night, protests grew stronger. People accused Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and other leaders of corruption and not caring about citizens.

Facing huge pressure, PM Oli resigned on Tuesday. So far, 19 people have died and hundreds have been injured in the violence.
