Mumbai: Coldrif Cough Syrup Row: Health experts have once again warned parents not to give cough syrup to children below 2 years of age unless a doctor specifically advises it. The warning comes after reports of serious side effects linked to some cough syrups used for infants.
Doctors say that for mild cough and cold, parents should avoid using over the counter medicines and instead try simple, safe home remedies that help clear mucus naturally.
Recommended Home Remedies:

Warm steam: Let the child breathe in mild steam to ease congestion.
Gentle chest rub: Massage the baby’s chest and back with warm coconut or mustard oil.
Hydration: Give enough fluids like warm water, soup, or milk (as per age).
Saline drops: Use nasal saline drops to clear a blocked nose.
Honey (only for kids above 1 year): A small spoon of honey helps soothe throat irritation.
Pediatricians say cough syrups can cause breathing problems, drowsiness, or allergic reactions in infants.
“If your baby has high fever, difficulty breathing, or constant cough — consult a doctor immediately,” experts advised.
Don’t panic if your baby catches a cold it’s common. Most colds get better in a few days with care and home remedies. Avoid self-medicating, especially with cough syrups meant for adults.
