Bhandara: A shocking incident has emerged from Bhandara, where a bank’s assistant manager stole money from his own branch after suffering heavy losses in online gaming and share trading.
The accused, Mayur Nepale (32), served as the assistant manager at the Canara Bank branch in Chikhla Mines, Tumsar. Police said he had taken multiple loans and lost significant amounts in online games and the stock market, which pushed him into planning the theft.
Police recovered around ₹96 lakh in cash from Nepale and seized his bike, car, mobile phone, and other belongings — together valued at over ₹1 crore.
Before committing the theft, Nepale had withdrawn money from three Fixed Deposits, including ₹80 lakh from his father’s FD and ₹32 lakh from other customers’ accounts. His total debt reportedly stood at nearly ₹90 lakh, consisting of a car loan, education loan, app-based loans, and money borrowed from friends.
Since he had access to the strong room keys, he left it unlocked, removed CCTV cameras at night, packed the cash in a bag, and fled to Nagpur on his bike. Police later traced and arrested him.
