Amravati: Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has taken a firm stand on the ongoing demands for farmer loan waivers, stating that only genuine farmers in need will benefit from the scheme. “We will ensure loan waivers for deserving farmers, but those driving Mercedes or involved in land deals will not be eligible,” he warned unequivocally.
Speaking at an event after visiting the Vitthal Temple in Kaudanyapur, Amravati district, Bawankule emphasized that the state government remains committed to its promise of supporting struggling farmers. However, he clarified that those who have misused agricultural loans to build farmhouses, purchase luxury cars like Mercedes, or sell land for layouts will be excluded from the waiver scheme.
“Loan Waiver for the Needy, Not the Wealthy”
Bawankule reiterated, “The loan waiver is meant for farmers in genuine distress, those who are truly engaged in agriculture and facing hardships. Our government will stick to this principle.” He also highlighted key initiatives of the Devendra Fadnavis-led government, including the promise to increase the monthly honorarium for women under the ‘Ladki Bahin’ scheme from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,100. Additionally, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to waiving electricity bills for farmers for the next five years.
High-Level Committee to Finalize Waiver Plan
To streamline the loan waiver process, a high-level committee is being formed, with its announcement expected during the upcoming monsoon session of the state legislature. Bawankule revealed that a meeting, including Minister Bachchu Kadu and 8-10 other ministers, is scheduled for July 3 at the Vidhan Bhavan to discuss and finalize crucial decisions.
Monsoon Session to Focus on Key Issues
The state legislature’s monsoon session, set to take place from June 30 to July 18, is expected to see heated debates on critical issues like the farmer loan waiver, the imposition of Hindi, and highway projects. The Mahayuti government is likely to face tough questions from the opposition on these matters.
Bawankule concluded by assuring that the government will address farmers’ challenges thoughtfully but will not forgive those who have misused agricultural loans, sending a clear message against fraudulent practices
