Nagpur — A new political confrontation has erupted in North Nagpur after BJP leader Ashish Shelar claimed that more than 8,000 Muslim voters have been listed at multiple places in the voter rolls.
Congress MLA Nitin Raut strongly objected to the statement, accusing Shelar of trying to divide people on religious lines and create social tension. Raut has also filed a formal complaint with the Election Commission, demanding an inquiry and action against Shelar.
The controversy comes amid growing concerns over errors and duplicate names in Maharashtra’s voter lists. Recently, Raj Thackeray also highlighted the issue, saying several voters’ names appear in more than one constituency.
Responding to the criticism, Shelar said, “We just want clear and fair voter lists,” but insisted the issue was mostly seen in constituencies held by Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) MLAs.
Raut, however, hit back sharply, saying, “The BJP is trying to spread division in society — this is dangerous for democracy.”
The ongoing dispute has once again intensified the political atmosphere in Nagpur and across Maharashtra, with both sides trading accusations over the integrity of the electoral process.
