Mumbai: Doctors warn that white sugar, brown sugar, jaggery or honey all have the same effect on the body. People on social media say quitting sugar even for 10 days gives glowing skin and some weight loss.

Why Cutting Sugar Matters

Experts explain there are two kinds of sugar:

Added sugar – put in foods like cakes, biscuits, soft drinks, jaggery and honey. This can harm health.

Natural sugar – found in fruits, milk and vegetables. This is safer because it comes with fibre and nutrients.

Too much added sugar can cause diabetes, belly fat, fatty liver, heart problems and tooth decay. A 2023 Lancet study says 101 million people in India already have diabetes.

What Happens When You Quit Added Sugar

Nutritionists say benefits start fast:

  • 3–5 days: better blood sugar control
  • 5–6 days: improved digestion
  • 7–8 days: better mood
  • 9–10 days: healthier looking skin
  • Weight loss needs at least a month with a balanced diet.

How Much Sugar is Safe?

WHO advises keeping added sugar below 10% of daily calories; 5% is even better.

Experts say about 25 g (6 teaspoons) per day is a healthy limit.

UK NHS guidelines: Adults 30 g, children 7–10 years 24 g, 4–6 years 19 g, toddlers 14 g.

For diabetics, eat small portions of fruits like apples and guava and choose low GI foods.

Nutritionists stress that cutting added sugar should be a long-term lifestyle choice, not just a quick detox.
