New Delhi: A lawyer tried to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai in the Supreme Court on Monday. The lawyer, Rakesh Kishore, shouted, “India will not tolerate insult of Sanatan Dharma” as he was taken out of the courtroom.
CJI Gavai stayed calm and told everyone, “Don’t get distracted. This does not affect me. Continue with the hearing.”
Shoe almost hit Justice Vinod Chandran, and Kishore later apologized to him, saying it was meant for the Chief Justice.
Lawyer Rohit Pandey said Kishore has been part of the Bar Association since 2011 and strongly condemned the act.
Delhi Police released Kishore later the same day inside the court.
Attack may be linked to CJI Gavai’s earlier comments in September on a case about a Vishnu idol in Madhya Pradesh. After criticism on social media, Chief Justice said his remarks were misunderstood and that he respects all religions.
