Two Policemen killed in Maoist encounter in Jharkhand

Palamu: Two policemen died and one was badly injured in a gunfight with members of the banned Maoist group Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC) in Kedal forest, Palamu district.

Police said they had information that TSPC leader Shashikant Ganjhu, who has a reward of ₹10 lakh, was hiding in the area with his team and planning an attack.

When security forces reached forest, Maoists started firing. Police fired back. In firing, policemen Santan Kumar Mehta and Sunil Ram were killed. Another policeman, Rohit Kumar, was hit by bullets and is now in hospital in Daltonganj. Doctors have operated on him.

Senior police officers, including Palamu SP Reeshma Ramesan, met the injured jawan and spoke to families of two who died. Post mortem of two policemen is being done.

Police believe some Maoists may also have been injured or killed, but no bodies have been found yet. The forest has been sealed, and search work is still going on.

Kedal village, where the fight happened, is very close to Ganjhu’s house. He is known to control Maoist work in Palamu and Chatra districts.
