Leh, Ladakh : A curfew was imposed in Leh after clashes between police and protesters demanding statehood for Ladakh left at least four people dead and dozens injured. A local BJP office was also set on fire.

Govt blamed activist Sonam Wangchuk for the violence, but he denied claims. Wangchuk had been on a hunger strike and called for calm after stopping it.

Ladakh lost its special status in 2019, and both Buddhist-majority Leh and Muslim-majority Kargil now demand statehood and more local control. Frustration over delays in talks and high unemployment fueled the protests.

Police used bullets and tear gas, saying they acted in self-defense. Authorities have launched an investigation, and further talks with protesters are planned.
