Mumbai: Navratri is being celebrated all over India with faith and joy. This festival started on 22 September and will end on 2 October with Durga Visarjan and Dussehra. It is dedicated to Maa Durga’s nine forms, and many devotees keep fast during these nine days.

During fasting, people do not eat onion and garlic. In traditional belief, these are called tamasic foods, which may increase anger, laziness, or unwanted desires. Since fasting is a time for peace, purity, and prayers, such foods are avoided to keep the mind calm.

Vegetables to Skip During Navratri

  • Apart from onion and garlic, some other vegetables are also not advised because they are heavy to digest. These include:
  • Beans and peas
  • Tomatoes
  • Cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage
  • Brinjal (eggplant)
  • Mushrooms
  • Green leafy vegetables

Reason Behind This

  • Cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli: can cause gas and acidity.
  • Brinjal: may have insects after the rainy season.
  • Mushrooms: sometimes lead to stomach upset or food poisoning.

The Healthy Choice

Fasting food is usually light and simple, like fruits, milk, curd, potatoes, and kuttu (buckwheat) dishes. These are easier to digest and keep the body energetic during festival.
