Mumbai: Many people love to drink hot tea, coffee, or milk. But doctors warn that drinking them too hot can hurt the body. Research shows that very hot drinks can increase risk of food pipe cancer .

Most tea or coffee sold in shops is around 85–90°C. At this temperature, the hot liquid burns the throat and food pipe again and again, which can later lead to cancer.

What Studies Show

In 2016, health experts said that drinks hotter than 65°C may cause cancer.

In South America, Asia, and Africa, people who drank drinks hotter than 70°C had more cases of food pipe cancer.

Big study in the UK on 500,000 people found that those who drank 8 or more cups of hot tea or coffee every day were six times more likely to get this cancer.

When you swallow very hot drinks, inside layer of your food pipe gets burned. If this happens often, wounds form and later can turn into cancer. Animal tests also showed that hot water made cancer lumps grow faster.

How to Drink Safely

Doctors say problem is heat, not the tea or coffee itself. To stay safe:

Wait 3–5 minutes before drinking.

Drink only 3–4 cups a day.

Add cold milk or water.

Keep the cup open or blow to cool it.

A steaming cup may taste nice, but waiting a little before drinking can protect your health.
